Beyond Watching the Show: Playhouse Disney Halloween Party Ideas

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Welcome to this week’s edition of Beyond Watching the Show, where I give some ideas of activities for kids that enjoy a particular show that go beyond just watching the show. If you have more ideas of activities for this show please comment and share your ideas. Also, please comment here if you have a request of a show to feature in an upcoming edition of Beyond Watching the Show.

This week’s edition is about some Halloween party planning ideas I found on the Playhouse Disney website. I thought about waiting until closer to Halloween to do this edition of Beyond Watching the Show, but I decided it was better to share now and give you time to do the prep work if you want to do one of these themed parties.

Little Einsteins Halloween Party - One of the party planning ideas Playhouse Disney’s website has is a Little Einsteins themed Halloween Party. It includes themed colorful invitations and envelopes that you can print out. It also has several Halloween themed recipe ideas. For the more crafty aspects there is decoration, costume, games, activities, and party favor ideas.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Halloween Party: For those more into Mickey there is similar ideas on the site for a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Halloween Party. It includes invitations and party favor bags you can print out. It also has some more Halloween themed recipes, which can fit in just as well with a the Little Einsteins Halloween Party. It also has some great Mickey themed Halloween crafts to print and make to decorate for the party. Lastly there are games and activities ideas for during the party.

Beyond Watching the Show: Martha Speaks

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Welcome to this week’s edition of Beyond Watching the Show, where I give some ideas of activities for kids that enjoy a particular show that go beyond just watching the show. If you have more ideas of activities for this show please comment and share your ideas. Also, please comment here if you have a request of a show to feature in an upcoming edition of Beyond Watching the Show.

This week’s edition contains ideas for entertaining fans of Martha Speaks beyond watching the show.

Martha Speaks Books: There is a series of kid’s picture books by Susan Meddaugh, which the TV show is based on. There is Martha Speaks, Martha Blah Blah, Perfectly Martha, Martha Walks the Dog, and Martha and Skits.

Martha Speaks Coloring Pages: The PBS Kids website for the show has a good selection of Martha Speaks coloring pages that you can print out for kids to color.

Free Rice Vocab Site: You may not think of this as a site that would interest kids, but I was introduced to this site by an 8-year-old. It is a fun vocab test that donates rice to the UN World Food Program. The words and definitions are often confusing connections even when you know the words, although they do make sense they are not usually the normal words you would think of in defining the words. Thus is is a great way for both adults and kids to learn vocabulary together, as kids like seeing when the adults do not know the answers either. It can get repetitive, but that helps reinforce the newly learned words.

Beyond Watching the Show: My Friends Tigger and Pooh First Day of School Activities

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Welcome to this week’s edition of Beyond Watching the Show, where I give some ideas of activities for kids that enjoy a particular show that go beyond just watching the show. If you have more ideas of activities for this show please comment and share your ideas. Also, please comment here if you have a request of a show to feature in an upcoming edition of Beyond Watching the Show.

This week’s edition contains ideas for entertaining fans of My Friends Tigger & Pooh beyond watching the show. I know I have done this show before here, but I am doing a special one on the cool page I found the other day with Back to School themed activities, as I thought this would be a good time of year to share this.

Start with the Party Checklist, which I think gives a list of the things you need to do the party and the steps to get ready, however I kept getting a Pardon Out Dust page, so not sure if this bug has been worked out and if this checklist is of any use.

There are some recipe ideas. This includes some nice healthy things that could just be used as after school snacks if you do not want to do a whole party thing. Just a few of the recipes include Lumpy’s Gold Star Sandwiches, Tigger’s Boingy Homemade Fruit Leathers, and Rabbit’s Sliced Cucumbers and Pita Crisps with Hummus.

The decoration ideas includes some printables and some decoration tips. The printables include First Day of School Collage Kits. There are also some ideas for games and activities, such as Circle Time. There is also a party favor idea section.

Okay, so I will admit when I wrote this and posted it to the future a few days ago a lot of the other printing links were not working including the recipes, but I am hoping they are fixed and up when this goes live. I think these could be really fun to use in these early weeks of school, so hopefully they get it up properly. If it is not, though, check out Nick Jr.’s First Day of School page with educational print outs, games, book basics, and recipes.

Beyond Watching the Show: Wizards of Waverly Place

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Welcome to this week’s edition of Beyond Watching the Show, where I give some ideas of activities for kids that enjoy a particular show that go beyond just watching the show. If you have more ideas of activities for this show please comment and share your ideas. Also, please comment here if you have a request of a show to feature in an upcoming edition of Beyond Watching the Show.

This week’s edition contains ideas for entertaining fans of Wizards of Waverly Place beyond watching the show.

Online Wizard Games - The Disney Channel’s website for the show has several fun online games that are based on the show. The games include World Wide Wiz Web (a Mahjong type game), Magic Curse Reverse, Magic Carpet Mayhem, Alex’s Double Maze Craze, and Wizardly Quiz.

Wizards of Waverly Place Book Series - This book series may be a good way to motivate kids to read. The first two books are out already and three more have release dates. They basically are text versions of the show, but can be a more educational (and still fun) way to relive the episodes. The first on is called Wizards of Waverly Place #1: It’s All Relative! The second on is Wizards of Waverly Place #2: Haywire. The ones to be released are Wizards of Waverly Place #3: In Your Face (September 2, 2008), Wizards of Waverly Place #4: Spellbound (December 2, 2008), and Wizards of Waverly Place #5: Top of the Class (March 3, 2009).

General Wizard Activities: There are plenty of sites on the web with general wizard activities. Just one site is FamilyFun’s. This site has Wizard crafts, recipes, party ideas, and printables.

New Sesame Street Website Launches

Monday, August 11th, 2008

I just heard about a new Sesame Street Official Website called SesameStreet.org. It is a great website for fans and parents/caregivers of fans of Sesame Street. The site is full of things to do and information about Sesame Street.

One of the best features of the site is Play Safe mode, which is easily activated from the top of game and playlist pages. Once clicked they can only do things on the games or playlist part of the site and cannot navigate to anywhere else on the web. It is deactivated by holding down Alt+ P+S. This sounds like a great thing to allow you to let preschoolers play without having to keep such a close eye on the computer screen while they play. Unfortunately, this only currently works for Windows users using Internet Explorer. I hope they it make Mac (I grew up on Macs and still only use them) compatible soon, especially if they do it for Firefox.

One main section of the site is the Games section. This area has about 400 flash mini games and 90 full games. That is a lot of play time if you like Sesame Street. Yes, they are often educational along with being fun just like the show, so you do not have to feel too guilty letting the kids play them regularly.

Another main area is Videos. This section has many Sesame Street segment videos that you can watch anytime. You can look for them by subject, theme, character, and songs. There is even a Classic Clips section.

The Playlist section brings together games and videos to create interactive preschool education units. There are several different units that have video clips and games that work together to teach the unit’s theme.

One last interesting feature of this site is My Street, which is a customizable page. This page lets you create your own Sesame Street home page adding your favorite videos and games from the site. Note that you do have to register to do this.

Inside the September 2008 Issue of Nick Jr. Magazine

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

The Nick Jr. magazine is one of my favorite ones I subscribe to. It is great for kids and those that take care of kids, especially parents. Below is a short wrap up of what is found in the September 2008 issue of the Nick Jr. magazine. This issue is Friendship themed.

This edition’s cover features characters from Ni-Hao, Kai-Lan going down what looks like a slide. The characters on the cover are Kai-Lan, Rintoo, and Hoho.

The Parents Connect pull-out magazine is an Age-By-Age Playdate Planner with Off-To-School Tips. The Off-to-School tips go with the issue’s friendship theme very well because they give several ideas to help teach kids social skills to make and keep friends. The tips also give some ideas to help those going to school for the first time feel more comfortable about it, such as Play School and visiting the classroom before school starts. The Playdate Planner includes a section for 3+, 4+ and 5+ with ideas of games to play based on age. There is also some tips on having multi age playdates.

The main magazine has some friendship themed activities, but a good amount of the activities are just general play themed. A few of the activities are Best Buddies matching game, First Day Friends of Mine song, Give ‘Em a Hand hidden picture, and Kai-Lan’s Dino Games board game. There are also some good pull out things in this issue including Diego’s Dinosaur Collector Cards and pencil toppers of favorite Nick Jr. characters including Pablo from The Backyardigans and Diego from Go, Diego, Go!.

Beyond Watching the Show: Toon Disney Passport to Reading

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Welcome to this week’s edition of Beyond Watching the Show, where I give some ideas of activities for kids that enjoy a particular show that go beyond just watching the show. If you have more ideas of activities for this show please comment and share your ideas. Also, please comment here if you have a request of a show to feature in an upcoming edition of Beyond Watching the Show.

Instead of the normal edition of activities for a specific show I am going to write about Toon Disney’s Passport to Reading website that I discovered the other day.

The Toon Disney Passport to Reading website looks like a fun way to encourage kids to read and discover the world through books. It is a great time of year to get kids reading with the next school year coming up, especially if they have been slacking off all summer. The site has three sections: Reading Fun, Reading Tips, and Reading Lists.

The Reading Fun section has some activities to get kids more excited about reading. One is Tish’s Bookball game that is a brick type game in which you help clean up the books in Tish’s room. For some actual reading there are Fillmore! Comic: Boosted Boxers and The Emperor’s New Throne Comic. There are also some Passport to Reading Bookmarks featuring some Toon Disney shows to print and make to use for reading.

The Reading Tips section has many tips to help make reading more interesting and encouraging kids to read more often.

The Reading Lists section has book suggestions based on age. It includes suggestions for kids from ages 6 - 11.

Beyond the Show: Activity for Fans of Total Drama Island

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

Welcome to this week’s edition of Beyond Watching the Show, where I give some ideas of activities for kids that enjoy a particular show that go beyond just watching the show. If you have more ideas of activities for this show please comment and share your ideas. Also, please comment here if you have a request of a show to feature in an upcoming edition of Beyond Watching the Show.

This week’s show is Total Drama Island. Yeah, I personally think the real Survivor show is stupid and this animated version is even worse, but I know some kids think it is awesome, so I am doing a post for those fans. Also, not a normal Beyond the Show post because I was too lazy to do much thinking and surfing the Internet on this one. Thus what I am highlighting for fans of the show (or really for parents of fans to know about) is one activity.

Total Drama Island Interactive - This is basically Cartoon Network’s official site for the show. It is interactive in a way that some real reality shows have taken to having interactive online parts nowadays. Basically there are different things you can do, such as collect Killer Collectibles, which you buy with marshmallows you get from playing the games. The games change every week based on the actual challenges featured in that week’s new episode. Another part of the interactive aspect is that the characters talk as you scroll over them (hint: definitely a site that requires sound on to really enjoy). Do not forget to create your camper to join in the fun. Actually I have to admit I kind of liked the site even though I do not like the show.

Beyond the Show: Activities for Fans of Recess

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

Welcome to this week’s edition of Beyond Watching the Show, where I give some ideas of activities for kids that enjoy a particular show that go beyond just watching the show. If you have more ideas of activities for this show please comment and share your ideas. Also, please comment here if you have a request of a show to feature in an upcoming edition of Beyond Watching the Show.

This week’s show is Recess.

images.jpeg

Kick Ball: Kick ball is one of the sports most often shown in the episodes of Recess. Get outside and play a real game of Kick Ball with your kid or kids. Round up some kids from the neighborhood or invite some of your kid’s friends over and have a game with full teams. Only you and the kid? You can still do a mock one-on-one game going through the different motions. Sure fielding does not work out too well this way, but it still can be a lot of fun and at least it is something active to do. Not sure about how to play kick ball, then check out the Wikipedia entry to give you a brief overview or refresher.

Recess Online Games: The show’s site on Toon Disney’s website has several online games to play including Dodgeball, Gus’s Bubble Trouble, and Recess Special Operations.

Recess/Playground Coloring Pages: I could not find any official Recess coloring pages, but I did find a Swing Set Coloring Page, a Slide Coloring Page, and a Seesaw Coloring Page.

Beyond the Show: Activities for Fans of 3, 2, 1 Penguins!

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Welcome to this week’s edition of Beyond Watching the Show, where I give some ideas of activities for kids that enjoy a particular show that go beyond just watching the show. If you have more ideas of activities for this show please comment and share your ideas. Also, please comment here if you have a request of a show to feature in an upcoming edition of Beyond Watching the Show.

This week’s show is 3, 2, 1 Penguins!

images.jpeg

3, 2, 1 Penguins! Printables: Big Idea’s fun website contains a few great printables. This includes coloring pages of Fidgel, Zidgel, Midgel, Kevin, the rocket, and Michelle and Jason. They also have printable connect-the-dot pages of the penguins (Fidgel, Midgel, Zidgel, and Kevin). They even have a sheet that you can print out that contains finger puppets of the main characters (the penguins and the two human kids) to cut out and use. I can just imagine how fun it could be for the kids to use them to act out their favorite 3, 2, 1 Penguins! scenes or episodes or even make up their own plots using the characters.

3, 2, 1 Penguins! Online Games: The Big Idea website also has some games based on the show. The arcade section contains about 5 different games including Jelly Jammers in which you help Michelle make sandwiches which in turn is to help Grandmum out.

General Penguin Coloring Pages and Crafts: This is one of my old blogs with lists to links of different coloring and crafts that are penguin themed. Includes links to general penguin coloring pages and crafts. With some creativity the kids could easily turn some of the regular penguin coloring pages and crafts into 3, 2, 1 Penguins! characters just be adding the spacesuits.

Beyond the Show: Activities for Fans of Speed Racer

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Welcome to this week’s edition of Beyond Watching the Show, where I give some ideas of activities for kids that enjoy a particular show that go beyond just watching the show. If you have more ideas of activities for this show please comment and share your ideas. Also, please comment here if you have a request of a show to feature in an upcoming edition of Beyond Watching the Show.

This week’s show is Speed Racer: The Next Generation. This new series of Speed Racer is an exciting and well animated show to watch on Nicktoons. Below are some activity suggestions for those kids that cannot get enough of Speed Racer that get them away from the television, but still let them be excited about Speed Racer.

SpeedRacerNextGen.jpg

Speed Racer Coloring Pages: As usual I try to find some free printable coloring pages and this is no exception. It was also one of the harder show to find some of, but this site I found has eight of them that are of characters from the original Speed Racer. Another coloring page site that might be of interest is Indy Kids, which is a small site made by kids with some Indy 500 history and related coloring pages.

Speed Racer Cake: This site has some instructions to make a Speed Racer car cake. It does not seem as straightforward as the mermaid cake I suggested in the H2O Beyond the Show post, but it seems doable.

Cardboard Box Race Car Craft: This is a fun craft to make a car that kids can wear and walk around with to pretend they are driving. The craft itself is entertaining for at least an hour (maybe, more if the kid tries to get it to look just like Speed Racer’s car) and then offers much more possibility of them being entertained running around pretending they are racing like Speed Racer.

Beyond the Show: Activities for Fans of H2O

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Welcome to this week’s edition of Beyond Watching the Show, where I give some ideas of activities for kids that enjoy a particular show that go beyond just watching the show. If you have more ideas of activities for this show please comment and share your ideas. Also, please comment here if you have a request of a show to feature in an upcoming edition of Beyond Watching the Show.

This week’s show is H2O. This seems to be a pretty popular show that was recently introduced in the United States on Nickelodeon. Even I find myself enjoying the episodes I catch. It really is an interesting show about humans becoming mermaids. It is like them having superpowers, but it is not done as a action superhero show, which I tend to not enjoy because in the end they lack plot depth.

getfile.jpeg

What H2O Character Are You?: This is an interesting online personality quiz to determine, which H2O character your personality most matches with.

Mermaid Coloring Pages: Mermaid coloring pages are not too hard to find on the Internet, although I could not find any that are specifically of the three mermaids in H2O. Here are some that are at least not replicating Ariel from The Little Mermaid. This site also has a good variety of mermaid styles including many that are anime style.

Mermaid Cake: This is a really cool cake idea to make a cake that looks like a mermaid. You can change the colors of it to make it look more like the H2O mermaids, especially by making the tail all the orangish color instead of the more varied color shown in the recipe.

Mermaid Crafts: One interesting mermaid craft is this toilet paper template, which can be printed in black and white and colored like the H2O mermaids. I also found this printable template to make a mermaid friend.

Beyond the Show: Disney’s Healthy Kids Website

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Welcome to this week’s edition of Beyond Watching the Show, where I give some ideas of activities for kids that enjoy a particular show that go beyond just watching the show. If you have more ideas of activities for this show please comment and share your ideas. Also, please comment here if you have a request of a show to feature in an upcoming edition of Beyond Watching the Show.

This week’s edition is a special one that does not focus on a particular show. Instead it is about Disney’s Healthy Kids website, which features characters related to the Disney shows of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Kim Possible, and Lilo & Stitch. I first discovered this website earlier this week and found it to be a great one that I think all kids should be encouraged to check out and learn from. The main thing that makes me recommend this is that it was an 8-year-old that showed this site to me and together we played on the site and had fun with it. The most amazing thing to me is this is a kid that mostly plays action games and this site is mostly trivia, but yet even he liked it.

Picture_1.png

The Disney Healthy Kids site is set up to resemble a camp competition between Disney’s Champ Camp (you help this team) and Lazy Acres. As you navigate the different areas of the camp competition the site teaches about the new food pyramid and eating a balanced diet. The site says the dialogue aloud, so turn the computer sound on, especially for kids who are not great readers, yet.

You start in the Mickey’s Mess Hall area, where you learn the basics of the food pyramid such as what the different color bars on it stand for. After you have learned about all the basics you take the trivia challenge about the information you learned in this area. You can pick to be Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, or Daisy and you compete against Pete as the Lazy Acres representative. If you get more point than the opponent, then you get a token for the area, which shows up in the bottom right corner of the window.

The second area is Kim Possible’s Science Cave. This area teaches about moderation and how it relates to the food pyramid. The trivia part after you learn about this topic works the, but you get to be Kim Possible characters (Kim or Ron) and play against the Kim Possible villain, Drakken.

The third are is Lilo’s Luau. In this area teaches about proportions and how much of each color bar you should eat compared to other bars. In the trivia part you can choose to be Lilo or Stitch and you are against Gantu.

The final area is Incredible Island. Here the you learn about how exercise is the stair part of the new food pyramid and how much it takes to burn off different food items. In the trivia part you can choose to be Violet or Dash and you are against Syndrome.

After you have token from each area you can take on the Champ Camp Relay. Now this is an action game making the other parts something you want to play through, in order to play this fun game. In level 1 you are Mickey and you just use the up arrow key to jump over obstacles and jump to eat food to keep his energy up. It gets faster as you go and you just try to go as far as you can before you run out of energy. You then get to shoot soccer goals based on how long you lasted before you move onto level 2 featuring you as Kim Possible. In this one you jump using up and duck using the down arrow. There is another soccer shooting bonus game before you proceed to the third level in which you also play as Stitch duck and jump to avoid obstacles as well as collecting the green food and avoiding the red food. After another soccer bonus level you proceed to level 4 in which you us up an down as before and also use the space bar for a force field. One more soccer bonus round after this and you get your final camp score.

To play entirely through it takes at least an hour, but can be longer. It certainly is kind of long to be recommended as something to let kids play through everyday, but letting them do it at least a few times within a span of a few weeks or a month until they have learned all the info well is a good way for them to learn about eating and living a healthy lifestyle. It sure is a fun way to learn about the new food pyramid and even parents may find it fun to play through themselves because the food pyramid sure has changed from its old form.

Beyond Watching the Show: Activities for Fans of Arthur

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

Welcome to this week’s edition of Beyond Watching the Show, where I give some ideas of activities for kids that enjoy a particular show that go beyond just watching the show. If you have more ideas of activities for this show please comment and share your ideas. Also, please comment here if you have a request of a show to feature in an upcoming edition of Beyond Watching the Show.

This week’s show is Arthur.

Arthur_tv_pb02.jpg

Arthur Coloring Pages: This part of the PBS Kids website contains coloring pages for a lot of the Arthur characters including all the main ones. Here there are a few other coloring pages. These ones are more complex and are scenes with Arthur characters.

Arthur Online Games: The PBS Kids website has many different online games to enjoy on the Arthur section of the website. It includes games like Binky’s Facts and Opinions that teaches the difference between facts and opinions, Scoop, and Connect the World. Some games require the Flash player while others require Shockwave to play.

Arthur Printable Crafts: There are some fun printable crafts on the PBS Kids website. Such as Party Hats that can be printed and colored in, Arthur Character Trading Cards, and Character Masks that are also print and color activities. Some other fun Arthur crafts I found on the web are an Arthur Toilet Paper Roll Craft and Pin the Glasses on Arthur Game Craft.

Arthur Video and Computer Games: There are several good video and computer games based on the Arthur show and books. One of the best that I have personal experience with is Arthur’s Absolutely Fun Day for Game Boy Color. My little brother was around preschool age when this game came out and he used to love playing the game and has even saved it now that he has grown out of it because it was one of his first favorite games. Some of the more interesting computer games are the educational ones such as Arthur’s Reading Games and Arthur Math Games.

Beyond Watching the Show: Activities for Fans of Little Einsteins

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Welcome to this week’s edition of Beyond Watching the Show, where I give some ideas of activities for kids that enjoy a particular show that go beyond just watching the show. If you have more ideas of activities for this show please comment and share your ideas. Also, please comment here if you have a request of a show to feature in an upcoming edition of Beyond Watching the Show.

This week’s show is Little Einsteins.

littleeinsteins.thumbnail.jpg

Little Einsteins Print and Color Pages: This part of the Playhouse Disney site has coloring pages to print and color of the Little Einsteins characters including the Rocket they travel around in.

Musical Instrument Crafts: These are not Little Einsteins themed, but being musical instruments they do fit in well with the main aspect of the show being music. This site includes crafts such as making a box guitar and paper plate maracas. Kids can decorate however they want and perhaps even use some Little Einstein graphics to make them actually Little Einsteins themed.

Little Einsteins Birthday: This guide to throwing a Little Einsteins birthday includes some related activities to play that very well could work any day with a group of Little Einsteins fans. This guide also includes instructions on making a Rocket ship cake, however, the lack of actual photos makes it seem like it would be hard to actually follow successfully.

Mission to Learn: This activity on Playhouse Disney’s website is a interesting way to learn about different things. You start by selecting a Little Einsteins episode. Then there are different objects to select and information is presented related to them including about the featured artists and composers for the episodes.
