Kids TV on DVD: Frosty the Snowman/Frosty Returns
The original Frosty the Snowman
animated special first aired on CBS in 1969. It still repeats every year on television, but you can now get it on DVD, too. The DVD release of it I am reviewing has Frosty the Snowman and the sequel Frosty Returns.
Frosty the Snowman is one of my favorite classic winter specials to watch. There really is not much to the story, but it is a friendly one. I think I mostly like the snow aspect to it. The animation is also just so good, especially considering how long ago it was done. Basically it is just a timeless classic.
Frosty Returns is definitely not anywhere as good as the original, but it can be entertaining. The main thing is the new music in this one is just obnoxious. The storyline is not that bad, although, I do not like the little narrator guy. It also is not as feel good friendly natured as the first one. I attribute this mostly to the angry rants many of the adult characters have about snow.
This DVD is not entirely worth purchasing considering Frosty the Snowman is sure to be shown on television this season at least once. Having Frosty Returns on it sure does not make it any better of a release, but I guess it adds a little length to its entertainment time. Plus the DVD only has one special feature. The special feature is just a quick silent Pencil Test from the Creation of Frosty. Overall I totally recommend the original Frosty the Snowman, but definitely only rent and do not buy this DVD version if you want to see it other than when it airs on television.
