“Mater’s Tall Tales” Review
“Mater’s Tall Tales” is a series of shorts that are part of the Cars Toon series that features the characters from Disney/Pixar’s Cars movie. The first episode called “Rescue Squad Meter” premiered last night, but I missed it because I accidentally recorded the second showing of the Howl & Shriek movie and the short only showed at the end of the first showing. Today, though, I recorded the right showing and saw the premiere of the second episode, which I describe below. The third episode called “El Materdor” will premiere after the first showing of tomorrow’s movie on Toon Disney.
“Mater the Greater” starts with Mater going off a ramp and landing awkwardly. Lightning McQueen asks Mater if he is okay. Mater then launches into one of his talle tales about how he used to be a daredevil. The scene then transports to Mater in a stadium with a Patriotic red, white, and blue flag paint job. In the stadium scenes he does all kinds of stunts from shooting out of a cannon to dropping down into a bucket of water from way up high. It then briefly flashes back to Mater and Lightning McQueen at the gas station. The tall tale then gets entirely ridiculous as Mater says his best daredevil stunt was going over Carburator Canyon with Lightning McQueen, who does not remember it. It ends with Mater stopping the story suddenly after them starting the jump. McQueen asks what happened and Mater simply says McQueen did not make it.
The short’s animation is top Pixar quality as can be expected. The plot is not bad for a short segment. It is kind of funny and a nice new dose of the memorable Cars characters to give a dose of Pixar/Cars before the new Cars movie comes out in 2011.
If you have missed these showing on Toon Disney, then you can see them on the Disney Channel on November 1, 2008, and on ABC Family starting December 23, 2008, as part of the 25 Days of Christmas line up.
