Nickelodeon Original Movie: Spectacular Review
I really did not expect much from the music themed Spectacular movie, but I decided to record it anyways (watched other regular Monday shows live instead of this). I must admit it was not that bad of a movie, but that may be related to me just thinking it would be too much like High School Musical. Sure it is a little bit like that movie in that it is about a high school show choir, but it is unique enough to be worth watching. At first I thought it was going to be an annoying musical, as there is some random them breaking into song moments, however theses moments are more realistic and you can actually see them happening in real life than many of the High School Musical movies. Also, there is not really much of the musical type stuff. Instead most of the music parts are them performing and it has to do with the plot instead of trying to make the plot with the song, which is okay, but there are enough of those from Disney recently.
The movie is about a boy being kicked out of his band and his school’s show choir wanting him to be their lead singer. The girl that leads the choir is a stickler for tradition and the traditional way to perform in the show choir. The boy ends up coming in and gets the others to be more free with dancing and singing including them making a new dance for the big show behind the girl’s back. The choir ends up mad at both of them because the girl does not like the dance and the she tells them he is only in it for half of the prize money to pay for his demo CD. They smooth things over and then he almost abandons them on the big show day because he gets a chance to get a record deal with his old band. In the end he does perform with the show choir, but they lose because not all members were registered (the boy’s band), but he does get the record deal.
Overall it is not the best movie. The plot moves way too fast and does not have too much development depth to it. I certainly would not watch it as a theater or even a DVD release, but it was not too bad for a television movie. It was at least better than I thought it would be.
