TV on DVD Review: Ni Hai, Kai-Lan Super Special Days
Ni Hao Kai-Lan: Super Special Days is the first DVD release of this show. The second release of the show only came out yesterday, so this show’s DVD releases are still quite minimal, however, for the show only being a year old and still a current show that is an adequate enough amount of releases if you ask me. Anyways this DVD has four episodes of the show and because Super Special Days is such a broad theme Nickelodeon has for once stayed on theme throughout rather than naming the release by the first episode on the disc and then just having unrelated episodes.
The episodes on this disc are “Dragonboat Festival,” “Beach Day,” “Twirly Whirly Flyers,” and “Everybody’s Hat Parade.” The episodes are all pretty enjoyable, especially for fans of the show. I really like how the first two teach about calming down, which is something I know a lot of kids fail to learn until much later (or sometimes too late).
The special features on this DVD include a Meet Kai-Lan photo gallery that shows pictures of the characters with a short caption that teaches a Chinese word. It is nicely done and a good special feature to do with the kid(s), but it is somewhat disappointed that this preschool DVD does not read the captions. However, it seems Nickelodeon never does and Disney is much better at making their DVDs friendly for the younger crowd that cannot read, yet. The other special feature is “My Favorite Places” Music Video.
Overall this is a pretty good DVD release. It is actually the best Nick Jr. one I have watched, as it teaches Chinese in the special feature and it actually keeps on theme.
